Brittney Wallace and Sheridan Tochkins, PA-MOJA volunteers from Abbotsford, BC in Canada visited their sister school, Uaso Nyiro.

They were warmly greeted by Head Teacher, Patrick Mwaura, and welcomed into the tiny Grade 5 classroom that consisted of a dirt floor surrounded by scrap timber post walls. Forty-nine students immediately broke into song as they entered the classroom.

They continued to sing several songs as they beat the rhythm on their desks. The passion of the students and their teacher impressed the volunteers.

After brainstorming what makes the world wonderful, Sheridan read the story of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” and Brittney showed the Kenyan students the I-Movie of Canadian elementary students from Asia North Poplar, singing the song.

They then moved out into an open field where together they practiced the song before recording it on video. See video below.

Uaso Nyiro has been fortunate enough to receive funds to build a Grade 4-8 school which will be up and running by September 2012.

The principal is still hoping to purchase new uniforms for the students.
