Life at sweetwaters Secondary

Sweetwaters Secondary school, the sister school to Walnut Grove Secondary School, has greatly benefited from PA-MOJA. Two dairy cows were bought for the school by PA-MOJA through the Ol Pejeta Conservancy.  This has been a great help to the school because milk is expensive to purchase for the student’s and staff’s daily tea. The access to fresh milk has also helped the student’s families who have been relieved from the burden of paying an extra fee for their children’s tea provision at school.

The dung from the cows is used to produce fuel through a newly installed biogas system that was funded by PA-MOJA. This will decrease the amount of firewood that is needed, which will save money and protect local forests.

Many people find the cow dung to be just waste material, but to this school and the surrounding community, it is a source of heat for cooking. The students at Sweetwaters Secondary even go the extra mile of carrying cow dung from their homes when they come to school in the morning to help make this biogas project a success.

In 2011, PA-MOJA converted a classroom into a local library. This library has had a positive impact on the whole area because it allows students a place to study, read books and learn computer skills. Also, for a minimal fee, adult community members can take computer lessons and learn a variety of computer programs.
