Transforming Tigithi Secondary School

tigithi

Tigithi Secondary School is a mixed day and boarding school that is in the process of becoming a boys boarding school. The parent community supported the agreement to make Malek Secondary School a girls school and Tigithi Secondary a boys school . This change is already taking place as there are now only 65 girls in Tigithi and 312 boys.  The girls are only in Forms 3 and 4 while Forms 1 and 2 are all boys classes.

PA-MOJA has helped Tigithi with funds to construct an internet mast. The school is now in the process of obtaining an internet subscription to enable students to start browsing the internet and connecting to their sister schools in Canada and the US. The Ol Pejeta Conservancy, in collaboration with PA-MOJA, has also provided funds to refurbish five permanent classrooms at Tigithi Ssecondary.

Tigithi Secondary School is an upcoming school. In the national exams of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, this school managed to produce 8 university scholarship students despite numerous hardships in the school community. Unlike any other school in the area, the students in this school face more fee problems and are always in and out of school in search of fees.  There is the additional problem of low rainfall which causes food shortages both in school and at home for the students. The Head teacher, Mr John Muchiri, has put considerable effort into the utilization of water collected from the seasonal rains which is stored in the 10,000 litres stone tank.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy, with some funds from PA-MOJA sister school, Acadia Junior High School in Winnipeg, has helped the school install a  drip irrigation system for the garden.  The school also has two greenhouses to grow food to feed the students.
