Three enthusiastic PA-MOJA volunteers, Heather Hall, Sheridan Tochkins, and Amber Illes, manned a booth at the Global Education conference at Fraser Heights Secondary School in Surrey to spread the word about PA-MOJA.
Nearly 200 teachers participated in the October 22nd Conference which focused on infusing issues of peace, human rights, appropriate development and environment into the existing BC curricula with the goal of raising responsible global citizens. It was a perfect forum for raising awareness of the work that PA-MOJA does and for making connections to bring new sister schools on board.
Heather, Amber and Sheridan spent the morning handing out flyers, sharing videos from the website and speaking passionately about the work PA-MOJA does with the community that surrounds the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Many interested participants stopped by the PA-MOJA booth to admire the posters, photographs, letters, newspaper articles and Kenyan artifacts. The photograph of Newton with his hand extended towards the Northern White rhino was a favourite catalyst for conversations about wildlife and people.
“This is just great,” said one teacher from Surrey. “I have been looking for a way to get my students involved in a leadership role in education in Africa and PA-MOJA certainly offers that opportunity.”
Congratulations to Angela Harrison from Confederation Park Elementary in Burnaby who won the PA-MOJA raffle, a soapstone carving of a rhino.
At 2:00 pm the conference came to a close and PA-MOJA took another step closer to fulfilling a dream of helping kids get to school while supporting the conservation efforts of the Ol Pejeta Wildlife Conservancy in the Laikipia region of Kenya.
What a great idea exchange…Congratulations everyone!
