Elizabeth Nyawira and Hellen Njoki are the main cooks at Pelican House. They have become an integral part of the PA-MOJA team and have taught us many lessons about Kenyan culture.
They both have small farms where their children live when they are working. This is particularly challenging for Elizabeth as her son, Gideon, is only four years old.
They stay at Pelican for 4 weeks and have 6 days off each month, which they usually take all at once. They also have one month leave per year. Hellen goes for her leave in the month of September and Elizabeth takes her leave in the month of October.
When they work during the holidays such as Christmas, Easter and any other public holidays, they are eligible for overtime but are more often given days in lieu.
Because of laws in Kenya that often favour men in divorces, both Hellen and Elizabeth have chosen not to marry their partners.
