Esther lives with her mother, Mary Wangui, grandmother and 4 younger siblings on a small farm. She hasn’t seen her father since she was a young child. Esther helps her mother and grandmother by getting water from the community tank, cleaning the house and taking care of the younger children.
The family survives by growing enough beans, maize and cabbage to feed themselves. They sometimes earn extra money for school supplies by raising hens and selling the eggs at the community market.
Esther’s dream is to go to university to study Interior Design. Her strongest subjects are Math and Chemistry. Her mother, Mary, is a strong supporter of education because she never had the opportunity to go to school. Mary often borrows books and paper from her neighbours so that her children can practice reading and writing. Esther’s grandmother has sold all her cows and goats to pay for her grandchildren’s school fees.
Esther has a message for her PA-MOJA donors: “I am so thankful to my mother and grandmother for working so hard to pay for my school supplies. I am most grateful to PA-MOJA and all the donors for choosing me as a scholarship recipient. Without this support, I could never have afforded to go to a good secondary school. My dream is to make my mother and grandmother proud and ensure the PA-MOJA doesn’t regret choosing me. I thank all my donors from the bottom of my heart and promise to work hard to earn this opportunity.”
