Second Semester 2019 Update
Silvio is a boy who had lost all hope of joining secondary school. Having reached out to well-wishers to sponsor him with no luck. All his classmates reported to school but he was left at home doing casual jobs and awaiting any luck that might come his way. He confirms, these were very stressful days in his life. While most teenagers worry about school, he was being forced to think about starting adult life, albeit more than 5 years before he should.
However, his fortunes changed after a visit from Ol Pejeta Conservancy staff at their home after they had shortlisted him after his application to the PA-MOJA and Ol Pejeta Scholarship.
Silvio is a second born in a family of 8 children. They live in a village called Depatas-Segera Ward. Silvio’s father is Partially blind while his mother is left hand paralysed. Despite her condition, the mother is the breadwinner. She does casual jobs in the surrounding flower farms.
Silvio’s biological father passed away when he was a young boy and that’s when his mother decided to remarry. Silvio’s mother got a job as a cleaner at Segera Mission center but her contract ended after two years. Life has never been easy since then. Life took a twist with getting basic needs becoming a problem since his dad can’t work due to his condition. Food was sometimes a challenge and he would frequently be sent home due to lack of school fees making him join his mother in the casual work to earn money for his school fees. In fear of inevitably being unable to pay his fee, his parents had been making him repeat classes and as a result, some of his peers are 3 years in high school.
Silvio would like to be a teacher. He developed the interest after seeing how teachers in his primary school were motivating them to work hard despite the challenges at home. Since then, Silvio felt he has a calling to assist children to achieve their goals.
In his free time, Silvio loves playing football. He is currently a member of Segera Gate Football Club in his village. His favourite football club is Arsenal. He also loves socializing and learning from other people’s opinions.
Silvio would like to thank his donor. He wishes God’s blessings upon them. He looks forward to one day putting up a scholarship foundation. With teary eyes, he says, “were it not for this scholarship, I would be working in the flower farms as a casual labourer, no doubt about it”.
