Clement is one of the most positive minded, determined and self-assured student in his class according to his class teacher. Clement has gone through a lot of hardship to be the young man he has grown to be. However, that has not deterred him from pushing for his dreams.

His mother suffered physical and emotional abuse from his father. And at the age of five, his parents separated. Life was never easy for the family having to go for days without food and also renting a shelter was a hurdle since his mother depended on casual work. By then they were living in Nairobi.

His grandfather came to learn of the suffering his daughter and grandchildren are going through and he managed to convince her to go back home and live with him in Laikipia County. Life was much better at their grandfather’s house. They were all enrolled in school and they at least had somewhere they could call home.

Clement is the third born in a family of five children. His elder sister is in Maseno University, another sister is in grade 12 at Gathuguru girls secondary school while his two younger brothers are in primary school. His two older sisters have been able to join school through the help of the well-wishers.

Clement was admitted in one of the prestigious school in Nanyuki but he had no hope of joining secondary school. Before we met him, he had tried all means to raise school fees from approaching well-wishers to organizing a fund drive and nothing came through for him. When the PA-MOJA Coordinator met with him over April school holidays, he was glad to report that the most interesting thing that has happened to him was been considered for the scholarship.

Clement would like to be a pilot when he finishes school.
During school holidays, Clement assists his mum in their small farm where they grow subsistence crops and at times he goes for casual work as a farm laborer. The money he earns enables him to buy school supplies for the following term. His hobby is playing football.

If given a chance to change one thing in Kenya; that would be the ever increasing rate of corruption. He wishes to hold dialogue forums in school and at home. During the forums, he seeks to enlighten his peers about corruption and its negative effect on country’s economy. He feels children of his age have a great chance to influence change.

And finally Clement has this to tell to his donors “I would like to thank my donors for their kindness and willingness to assist a student who had no hopes of joining secondary school. I would probably have joined a day school or not join the school at all and stay at home till my mother gets money to take me to school. I promise not to let you down and will work hard in my studies.”
