December 2019 Update

Semester 1 2019 Update

Joseph Mungai

Age: 18 years

School: Tigithi Secondary School

Grade: 10(2019)

Joseph goes to Tigithi Secondary School. This is one of the schools near the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and he is sponsored by PA-MOJA. His story used to be a sad one but now he is optimistic and confident about the future. In 2007, during post-election clashes that rocked parts of Kenya, he lost his parents. He and 6 of his siblings ended up living with their grandmother who is however well over 70 and in poor health. They were at the point of becoming urchins when they met with the PA-MOJA team who were visiting Mai Mahiu, which is where they were living. The team was touched by their story and decided to do more than just offer charity. They committed to educate him and his siblings and to take full responsibility for their lives until they were all old enough to fend for themselves and had at least college education. That was about 6 years ago. The commitment has not wavered and Joseph is now a mature youth in his sophomore year of high school.

He is torn between becoming a doctor or a lawyer. Sometimes he thinks he wants to become other things as well.  PA-MOJA have kept their word through many generous donors. He lives with his siblings in a home arranged by PA-MOJA. They have a new adopted family that shows them love takes care of them with no reservations. Unlike many kids in their situation, the grandma Mary kids were never separated and all live together.  Joseph, enjoyed his first year of high school tremendously although he did admit to being pretty nervous being in a boarding school so far away from his adopted family. He has however been making huge discoveries about himself and his abilities and every day he says he tries to challenge himself to learn something new. He believes that the only way he can ever repay his sponsors is excelling and making something great out of his life. Without a doubt, I will improve the lives of others in my community the same way PA-MOJA did for me. As he moves to his second year of high school, he hopes to overcome more challenges and solve bigger problems inside and outside the classroom.
