Lucy Wacera Wairimu
Age: 16
Graduated Student – November, 2019
School: St. Augustine Secondary – Boarder
PA-MOJA Scholarship started: 2016 – Form 1 (Grade 9)
Sponsoring School: Burnaby South Secondary, Burnaby, BC, Canada.
Lucy lives in a small village called Riacho with her single mother, Joanina Wairiumu. Lucy has 2 older brothers and 3 older sisters. The whole family lives in a tiny two room shack without water and electricity. Each child takes turns carrying water from the local community tank which is one kilometre from their home.
The small garden in their yard produces enough maize, beans and cabbages to feed the family, providing there is enough rain. During longer school breaks (August, December and April) Lucy helps her mother with the farm and spends the rest of the day practicing for her exams.
Lucy likes to play soccer and table tennis when she has spare time. Her dream is to be an accountant or electrical engineer. She is inspired by her Business, Physics and English teachers because they have taught her to love these subjects.
Lucy has a message for her PA-MOJA donors: “Without this scholarship, I would have had to quit school after Class 8 (Grade 7). I pledge to my donors to work as hard as I can to keep my grades high so that I can achieve my dream of being the first person in my family to go to university. I hope that one day I will be in a position to help a needy student in the same way I have been helped. Thank you so much for this opportunity.”
