Form 3 (Grade 11) – January, 2019
School: Tigithi Secondary – Boarder
PA-MOJA Scholarship started:  2017 – Form 1 (Grade 9)

Sponsoring School: Maple Creek Middle School, Coquitlam, BC, Canada.

Ephantus lives on a tiny rented plot of land.  He, his mother and 5 brothers and sisters share a small wooden hut. His father left the family when he was a small child and never returned.

Instead of buying land, Ephantus’s mother, Catherine, has poured all of her money into her children’s education.  She works as a laborer in her local neighbourhood, cleaning houses and doing farm work.  She values education and completed Form 4 (Grade 12) but could not afford the fees to go to university because both her parents had passed away.

Ephantus’s favourite subject is Biology; however, his dream is to go to Kenyatta University to become a newscaster. He likes to keep up on current news and world events whenever he can find access to the internet.

During school breaks, Ephantus helps his mother cook and clean and take care of his brothers and sisters. He also helps tend the family plot which produces enough beans, maize and cabbage to feed the family. He spends most evenings reviewing his schoolwork in preparation for his exams.

Ephantus has a message for his PA-MOJA donors:  “I am deeply grateful to PA-MOJA and all the donors who gave me the opportunity to further my education.  Without this scholarship, I had little hope of going beyond primary school; my life would have been spent farming and tending to sheep and cattle in my community.  I feel blessed and humbled by the generosity of people I have never met. I thank you so much and will work hard to make you proud.”
