NAME:  Jonelias Munyori Gacuca
Age: 17
Form 3 (Grade 11) – January, 2019
School: Tigithi Secondary – Boarder
PA-MOJA Scholarship started:  Form 1 (Grade 9)

Sponsoring School: Windermere Secondary School, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Jonelias lives with his parents and four siblings on a small plot of land in Wathituga village. They have two small timber houses with tin roofs.  Jonelias’s father wants his children to get an education because he didn’t have the chance to attend even Primary school. He doesn’t want his children to struggle the way he does, doing odd construction jobs for minimal wages.

Jonelias’s elder sister Gladys studies medicine in the university of Nairobi. She performed extremely well in high school so she was sponsored by the Kenyan government. The remaining part of her fees are paid by her cousin Rose, who is a hair dresser.

Jonelias’s mother grows maize, beans and kale on their small piece of land providing there is no drought. She has always encouraged her children to work hard on their studies so as to live a better life and to be more prepared for their future.

Jonelias is an ambitious young boy and is looking forward to studying Electrical Engineering in university. His favourite subjects are Physics and History; he had the highest grade in his History class. During his free time he also likes playing volleyball and drawing cartoons. If given a chance to change something about his school he would improve teachers-student relationships.

Jonelias comes from the Kikuyu community. He likes their traditional we

dding songs and circumcision ceremonies but he thinks his tribe members feel they are better than other communities in Kenya because they have produced three Kenyan presidents. If given a chance to change something in his community he would advise them to be at peace with other communities since all of them are equal.

Jonelias has a message for his PA-MOJA donors: “Thank you so much for this scholarship. If I hadn’t received this scholarship, I wouldn’t have gone to high school. I would have joined my parents laboring in other people’s gardens. I promise my donors that I will work hard in school so I can achieve my educational goal. In the future I hope to be able to help other needy students in the same way you helped me. Thank you so much. Asante Sana.”
