Soft-spoken and a boy of few words. He is direct to the point and has this serious look but he is very humorous.
Family Background
Raphael’s father employment was terminated when his provision was needed most at home. Raphael had just graduated from grade 8 and emerged the best student in his school. However, his dream of joining secondary school was about to hit the rock.
His mother works a casual labourer, the little she earned was used to cater for their basic needs. Raphael parents organized for a fund rive and managed to raise one-year school fees. He had no idea of where he will get school fees for the other three years. However, this did not deter him from working hard with a hope he will get a sponsor.
Were it not for this scholarship, Raphael’s parents had suggested he drop out of school for at least one year and join them in casual work as the source for money. This was not very pleasing to Raphael but he had no otherwise. This was not bound to happen because as the year was coming to a close his parents received a call from one of the community leaders Raphael had qualified for the scholarship. This will remain to be a memorable day for him.
Community
Raphael comes from Githira community. It’s one of the communities surrounding Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Some of the changes he would like to see in his community is youths stopping to abusing drugs, most students drop out of school due to lack of school fees, he hopes in future he will be able to sponsor few of them and lastly he would wish to create awareness on the need to conserve the environment and the importance of planting trees among the community members.
Achievements
Raphael loves his school because they offer innovation subjects, for example, aviation and electricity which many schools do not offer. A new library has also been put up, this has created more study time and space.
Last semester he participated in the music festival and his school emerged the best in the country. He was very happy to be part of the winning team.
