Jane Wanjiku Wairimu Story

Name: Jane Wanjiku Wairimu

Age: 16 years

Form: 2 (Grade 10 – in 2020)

School: St. Augustine Sirima Secondary School

Jane is very confident, articulate, bold and expressive. These are just a few words one can use to describe her. Meeting her first time one couldn’t believe she had just concluded her grade 8. One would mistake her for a grade 12 graduate. I got curious to know how this character was developed. She told me she has two reasons. One she is raised by a single mother, her mother has always told her she needs to believe in herself and secondly she is the first born in a family of three. This has seen her taking up very many responsibilities of caring and nurturing for her siblings.

Family Background

Unfortunately, all these outstanding qualities were about to be watered down because her chances of joining secondary school were very slim. Her mother who is the sole breadwinner of the family depends on casual labour for her income. The little she earns is used to pay rent and cater for their basic needs.

Regardless of the situation at home, Jane purposed in her heart to work hard optimistic she will get a sponsor. She hopes to be a doctor and she believed joining secondary school was a stepping stone.

Jane acknowledges were it not for this scholarship, she would have been employed as a house help and eventually get married with no career prospects.

Community

She comes from Tharua community. It is one of the communities surrounding Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Given a chance, she would ensure every child goes to school. Many children in her community have dropped out due to lack of school fees. This breaks her heart. She hopes in future to sponsor one or more kids.

Achievements

Jane loves her new school due to the high level of discipline and no student is discriminated against on the basis of his/her family background.

Last semester exam, which happens to be her first exam in secondary school she managed to score an A-(Minus). A grade she hopes to maintain throughout her four years in secondary school.

Besides academics, she also participated in athletics and handball. Her team emerged the best team in the regional competitions.
