Nancy Wanjiru Mwai Story

Name: Nancy Wanjiru Mwai

Age: 17 years

School: St.Monica Munyaka Girls Secondary School

Form: 3 (Grade 11 – in 2020)

She is one of a kind. Very confident and born a leader. In a crowd she always takes up the leadership roles.

In 2018, Nancy’s family went one trial after another. Her father lost his job and her mother and sister were hospitalized at the same time. This rendered the family hopeless. His father tried all he could to make ends meet by doing casual work but whatever earned was never enough to cater for Nancy school fees, basic needs, and hospital bills. This saw Nancy dropping out of school for a whole month. With no other option left her father had to sell all the cows and sheep they had to meet the family’s financial needs.

Nancy managed to report back to school but situation back at home show her drastically dropping in her performance. Her class teacher and father were a great support system throughout and she managed to improve her performance. The biggest worry for Nancy was where she will get school fees the following year.

Her father approached individual well-wishers, church management and organizations but nothing was forthcoming. At the thought of dropping out of school made Nancy cry uncontrollably. She has always believed education is what will give her a bright future.

Community

She comes from Weruini community. The biggest challenges include high school dropout rate due to lack of school fees, lack of sufficient water and poor infrastructure. She hates the fact that the community suffers from all this yet there is a ruling government. She feels corruption is a thorn in the flesh and has led to all these problems. She hopes in the future to be an influential person and improve the current situation.

Achievements

Nancy loves her school because of the serenity; the school is next to a forest. The teachers are also very committed to what they do.

She has consistently maintained good performance, something her parents are very proud of. She scores grade As and Bs.

With a grin  “I wish to express my gratitude for supporting me and paying my school fees. I do not take it for granted. With all the challenges at home, I had lost the hope of continuing with my education. I promise to continue working hard and be a disciplined girl.”
