December 2019 Update
William’s, a scholarship could not have been better timed. He was sure his education journey would end prematurely in grade 8 and despite his stellar performance in the final exam. When he discovered he was the one getting a scholarship in his community, he knew then and there that his life was going to change for good. For better.
Family Background
Williams’ family background is complicated. His parents are separated and he lives with his mother along with 5 siblings. She is not in fulltime employment and he freely admits getting all the kids in school is a constant struggle that often results in the kids not being in school owing to fee arrears. However, despite not being educated herself, he says she is his biggest cheerleader. She always reminds him and his siblings that the best thing a parent can leave their children for inheritance is education. She is passionate about seeing him grow into a respected educated youth.
Motivating Factor
William’s cousin was born and brought up in similar conditions in which attending school on a regular basis was difficult. Nonetheless, he worked hard and got an A in his final high school exam. This automatically qualified him for a government scholarship and he is now studying medicine in one of East Africa’s most prestigious universities. William is motivated to follow that example and he too hopes to be a doctor. With a scholarship, all he has to do is put his head down and do the best he can. Thanks to the scholarship by PA-MOJA and Ol Pejeta, he knows this will be his other chance to change both his family’s and communities life.
Community
William attests there are so many children in his community who have dropped out of school due to lack of school fees. He hopes in future he will be able to support a few through their secondary school education. Drugs and substance abuse is also rampant among young people. He hopes to be a role model and start awareness programs on the negative effects of drugs.
Achievements
William loves his school because of committed teachers, high level of discipline and good entertainment facilities. William has continued to be one of the top students since he joined high school and also the best in athletics. This has seen him scooping a lot of awards.
