Loise is the middle child in a family of 5 children. She lives in Ereri with her family in a tiny semi-permanent house. Like most people in the area, she has no access to running water or electricity which makes studying during the holidays a big challenge. Kenyan high schools begin each semester with exams on every subject that students are expected to study for during the school breaks.
Her parents are both unemployed and do odd casual jobs on the farms in their neighborhood to provide the basics for their 5 children, three of whom are in primary school.
Last term Loise scored an A- in her end term exams making her one of the best girls in Ndururumo High school. She is humble about her achievement and hopes to keep it up for the duration of her high-school education.
When asked about her career choice, Loise, like many girls in her area, hopes to become a doctor. This is testament to the critical gap in access to medical supplies that they witness their community struggling to overcome. She thinks most people from her community who study to be doctors never come back, preferring to work in larger towns. This is a common occurrence because most professionals do not want to work in a place where the infrastructure is broken and basic amenities such as water are not assured. She, however, strongly believes that if she becomes a doctor, she is committed to coming back to her community because that is where she is needed the most.
Loise has a message for her PA-MOJA donors: “I am very grateful to Carmen Sicotte and PA-MOJA for helping me pay my fees. My parents could never have afforded to take me to Ndururumo High school. I know the opportunity will greatly change my future and that of my community. I thank you so much for this blessing.”
