My name is Maina Linet Mumbi, I was born in a family of four and both of my parents are casual labourers but they separated a long time ago. I study at St. Augustine Secondary School. I reaIly love my school because everyone in the school is good, caring and understanding.
Business studies and English are my best subjects because I like listening to people who are speaking in English and also admire to be one day like them. That inspires me to always read novels that I get around me. I was very happy when we were at Ol Pejeta for the PA-MOJA meeting. We were given novels and I spent my holiday reading until I finished all three of them. Business is the best because I feel it is the one subject that even if I read it all alone without the teacher it seriously sticks in my mind and I also desire to become a business woman in the future.
One day I would like to pursue law and become a professional lawyer. The reason as to why I would like to do so is because back in 2015 my great grandfather divided his property among his children and my grandmother was given about three acres of shamba and her siblings were also given theirs. But unfortunately my great grandfather passed away one year later, and there was this merciless and pitiless granduncle of mine who decided to take advantage of my great grandfather’s death and took away the three acres of shamba from my poor grandmother who didn’t have a husband to stand strong with her, and she didn’t have the money to pay a lawyer. There came a merciful cousin of hers who was pitiful enough to offer an acre to my homeless grandmother in the Riacho area. From that day I swore that I will pursue law and stand for those people who are suffering out there because of corruption and injustice.
Basketball is my favorite game. I play it at school but at home I miss playing it because the pitch is very far from home where I can’t afford to use about two hundred shillings to reach. It inspires me because of seeing and watching some successful people who did it in life because of games and despite being the shortest in our school basketball team that does not discourage me from loving my game and always trying my best to stand up for my school team.
Apart from my best subjects and my favourite game I have a talent, which is dancing. I usually dance at school when we go for mass and also dance when I am at home in our local church. People alway ask me where I got the talent and the courage to dance in front of them and also dance very nicely. I first become confused but just try to convince them that it is just a talent like any other.
I qualified for the scholarship not because I was the best but because they saw the potential in me. I had a dream that I really wanted it to come true and give back to the community. I really promise to work hard to my level best to achieve my goals and make my dreams come true.
