PA-MOJA is a non-profit organization that operates under the Langley School District Foundation (LSDF) that helps Kenyan children go to school while supporting the conservation efforts of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy (OPC) in Kenya. Donated funds go towards the Kenyan student scholarship program, which helps the locals see the value of the conservancy and therefore support wildlife conservation. Promoting an awareness and respect for cultural diversity is an integral part of the work that we do through our rich cultural exchanges. “PA-MOJA” is a Swahili word, which means together. It is in this spirit that we work with to honour and learn from each other’s culture and provide students with opportunities such as education, leadership and travel. Hopefully the portraits and descriptions in the ‘This is PA-MOJA’ Exhibit punctuate how vital PA-MOJA is in supporting people and wildlife.
Here are a few of the PA-MOJA objectives:
1. PA-MOJA provides educational opportunities for hundreds of children. When fees are covered, students can focus entirely on their education. Please see our student scholarship page that provides a brief story about our current scholarship students.
2. We have school clubs and private donors who raise funds to provide scholarships.
3. PA-MOJA strives to listen and learn from Kenyans to better understand Kenyan culture. Like all cultures, it is incredibly complex. It is important to be open and inclusive.
4. All decisions are made in consultation with the Kenyan PA-MOJA team. This makes PA-MOJA effective and respectful.
5. PA-MOJA has built long-lasting relationships. PA-MOJA returns year after year to listen and learn; this develops trust and long lasting connections.
6. PA-MOJA facilitates online collaboration for students through the Butterfly Effect online learning program; connecting hundreds of students in Canada and Kenya through research. It has also given Kenyan students access to the internet they otherwise would not have had.
