Seven Cows Purchased for PA-MOJA

SEVEN COWS PURCHASED FOR PA-MOJA!

On July 15th, five teachers from British Columbia, Canada, together with the Joyce Ngaruni, principal of Sweetwaters Secondary and PA-MOJA liaison, Patrick Waigwa, visited a local farm with the goal of choosing seven healthy milk producing Freisien cows.

Four high schools will benefit from a regular milk program which will also be eventually used for a Biogas system.  The schools have been preparing for the arrival of these cows for months.

They have built paddocks, have the food ready, and stewards lined up to take care of the cows.  Students in their agricultural studies will learn how to sustain the production of milk and use of the biogas system.

Joyce, the principal of Sweetwaters said the school will benefit with the production of milk. “These cows,” she said, “will help to improve the nutritional needs of my students by providing milk for their porridge for breakfast and milk for their tea. These cows will in turn enhance academic performance of my students.”

In addition, the manure will produce bio fuel which is used to cook lunches so the students don’t have to purchase firewood.  No only does this save money, it also saves the environment because fewer trees are cut down to fuel the kitchen fires.
