PA-MOJA volunteers arrived at Tigithi Secondary to a warm welcome from long time head teacher, Mr. John Muchiri.
PA-MOJA has finished five classrooms and set up the drip irrigation system here. Today the school has electrical service plus two solar panels, a small library and a new computer lab with seventeen computers in addition to an extensive garden with two green houses, chickens and rabbits.
When Heather Hall suggested that Canadians could learn something from Kenyan farming practices, Mr. Muchiri laughed and said, “Nobody in Kenya would ever believe that Canadians could learn something from Kenyans.”
Next year Tigithi will become an all boys’ school.
Alison Stuart has begun to set up connections with the computer, science and geography teachers to share information between Heritage Woods High School in Coquitlam, B.C. and Tigithi in Kenya.
Clearly, Canadian students will be enriched by finding out about Kenyans’ views and knowledge on sustainability.
