Feisal’s story in 2023
My name is Feisal Salah, born in 2004, and I am the eldest of four siblings. I reside with my grandmother in a community bordering Ol Pejeta Conservancy known as Therua.
Hockey is my favorite sport. I love playing hockey because it teaches me life lessons beyond the rink. It instills values like sportsmanship, fair play, respect, and discipline. Through hockey, I’ve learned how to quickly connect with strangers and developed determination and perseverance. My favorite player is Braydon Bruce.
In the future, I aspire to pursue videography and photography. I’m drawn to videography and photography because they capture intimate moments, failure, loss, success, and more. The artistic aspect of photography fascinated me, creating imagery that allows me to virtually travel the world through videos and photographs. One of my favorite photographers is Cate Brown.
Canada is my favorite country due to its unlimited opportunities, rapid industrialization, and robust economy. It offers high standards of living, decreased taxes, and a strong economy with a low inflation rate. My goal is to attend school in Canada after high school to pursue a career in photography and videography.
I also have a passion for reading novels. The suspense created while reading most novels is amazing to me. Novels help me discover, learn, enjoy, and virtually travel to new places. Books are the easiest way to see the whole world.
Music is another love of mine. It has the power to change my mood, emotions, and serves as a source of motivation. Music allows people to express their feelings.
I enjoy socializing with people, which helps me learn, share ideas, and understand different cultures from around the world.
Feisal’s story in 2021
Feisal is the firstborn in his family; he lives with his grandmother at Riachu village. He has been raised by his grandmother since he was a toddler. They are small scale farmers planting food crops for consumption. His grandmother is elderly and has been ailing for a prolonged period therefore she is not able to cater for Feisal’s needs.
She says “I have had this condition for a prolonged time now and my grandson helps out alot at home. He runs almost all the household chores since my mobility is very compromised.I am no longer in a position to farm as I used to, so we now rely on food donations. My Illness advances every day taking away all the financial support I get from family and friends.
Feisal has been living with me because his mother was not able to cater for his needs when he was younger and so to ease her burden and allow her flexibility to work I took him in. Regrettably, his mother is not yet able to support him because she now has other children and one child is set to join high school as well. This is a very big financial strain for the family. Thank you for coming to my aid because I know his future is secure through education.”
Feisal says “ I love helping my grandmother a lot. I make breakfast before heading to school in the morning and prepare supper in the evening. When I am in school my favourite subjects are English and Kiswahili. When I am not studying and do not have responsibilities at home, I love playing soccer and riding bicycles. I would like to become a lawyer. I am inspired by a great lawyer called Amed Naser in our country who was raised in circumstances similar to mine in the northern part of the country in a town called Mandera. I would like to thank all the donors for supporting my education and easing the responsibility on my grandmother.
