Beth is the fourth born in a family of seven. All other siblings are is school, some in college and others in secondary school. Her parents depend on casual labour for upkeep. Her mother suffers from blood pressure and she is on very expensive medication. This has burdened her father who is the main breadwinner. Looking at the situation at the home Beth knew her chances of joining secondary school were very slim.

When her grade 8 exams were out, she decided to repeat one more year despite her been the best student. She approached her former school headteacher and shared her intentions with her. The teacher did not buy the idea but took it upon herself and approached a few of her friends who managed to raise her one-year school fees. Her one year in school was a good one, she was never sent home even a single day due to school fees but she was never settled wondering where she will get school fees for the years to follow.

What next?

With no assistance forthcoming, she decided to drop out of school and work as a casual labourer or house girl to get money to go back to school. When contemplating this, one of the community leaders called her father and informed her of the Ol Pejeta scholarships application. Her father decided to try his luck and Beth happened to be one of those who qualified. She has been a consistently good performer in her academics; this also gave her leverage.
